Bikram Yoga Postures

Bikram yoga is among the newest and most controversial forms of yoga. It was created by Bikram Choudhury from whose name the yoga name is derived from. This type of yoga is performed in a heated room (95 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit) and has 26 bikram yoga postures which are repeated twice at specific length of time. The yoga postures plus the exercise room conditions were to be patented by the creator but protests sparked from many places that are practicing this so-called "fire" or "hot" yoga.

Many historians refute the claim of Choudhury because yoga is an ancient art that is open for adaptation but must not be solely claimed by one person - especially someone from the new generation. Still, Choudhury argued that the postures used in bikram yoga are his own making and that the method of using a heated room, humidifiers, mirrors, carpets, and special texts are his own idea. The fight for the copyrighting was done because he wants all these to be used only by those who are certified by his own Yoga College of India.

The Bikram Yoga Postures

The postures used in bikram yoga start off with simple movements that increase to sets with more flexibility requirements then finish off with mellow movements. The 26 poses are often physically challenging but can be performed by beginners provided that they have enough hours of practice. These yoga positions helps promote the increase of sweat which help release toxins from the body - this action is promoted by the high temperature in the room.

Beginner or not, bikram yoga postures start with Pranayama and end with Kapalbhati. Often, these positions help in energizing the body, detoxification, and induce mental clarity.

Use after the Controversy

Although bikram yoga postures are considered "copyrighted" after the lawsuit was settled out of court, still, the practitioners can work on the poses and use a hot room but could not use "bikram" to call the exercise if the center is not certified by the school.

The bikram yoga trainer should be someone who has been trained by Choudhury's College. Using the name "bikram" will invite a lawsuit; therefore, hot yoga enthusiasts still do fire yoga but avoid calling the activity with the controversial name.

Special Points

Most yoga styles in bikram or fire yoga help reduce stress, improve health, and reduce body toxins - because this yoga induces sweating, the yogi must be suitably hydrated before the session and must have a personal mat and equipment. Also, soft, absorbent apparel are preferred here. These bikram yoga postures can be done even by people who have chronic illnesses.
